A major rebuild of Heroes of the Storm’s matchmaking system is coming
Feb 18, Heroes of the Storm matchmaking will continue to get improvements The development team at Blizzard focusing on Heroes of the Storm says that it is generally happy with the improvements to matchmaking that were delivered starting with late and that it wants to continue working on the system in order to make sure that gamers get into fair matches that result in fun engagements and close final results. In a lengthy blog post , the studio explains that its tweaks so far have been well received by the community and have improved the battles based on data the company is gathering from the Multiplayer Online Battle Arena experience. For the coming weeks, Blizzard is aiming to introduce a new rule for Quick Match that will make sure that only one of the following heroes is given to one team, to limit cases where cooperation is impossible: The company also says that it is happy with the slight increase in the time gamers spend in the matchmaking queue of Heroes of the Storm since the changes have been introduced, with the value going up from 80 to seconds on average. This is a direct result of the focus on fairness rather than on fast pairing, and it seems that Blizzard has no clear way to reduce the waiting time at the moment. Heroes of the Storm will continue to get new heroes and balance patches A new small update for the MOBA is now live and makes changes to the abilities of Li Ming, which the developers consider to be a little too strong at the moment, as well as Stitches, Rehgar and Anub’arak.

In a recent Reddit post, the two-time top player in the NA region, Srey, has called out HOTS’ matchmaking as the single biggest thing holding the game back, and I completely agree. Heroes of the Storm has been going from strength to strength. It’s releasing some very cool skins , meaningful gameplay and UI updates with comprehensive notes from the developers, and it hasn’t stopped releasing heroes with bonkers control schemes that defy MOBA convention.
That’s a big reason we all love the game. There have been so many strong and interesting characters brought out in recent updates — Leoric, Johanna, Kael’Thas, Sylvanas, and The Butcher. Some of these heroes have higher skill ceilings than others, but no matter how good you are, it’s much harder to carry a team in HOTS than it is in, say, Counter-Strike. That’s one of the main criticisms of the game — not only is it hard to have a big impact on a match as a lone decent player, but with the wild variations in heroes and roles, it’s hard to even find metrics to measure your performance.
The amount of times a lower ranked player would point at a more skilled teammate’s damage stats and say “You’re not doing your job! Of course, rank in Blizzard games is usually a smokescreen, and your real elo number is hidden from you. That’s why many have taken to HOTSlogs, a third-party system design to tell you your real rating, as well as give you some more in-depth stats. So it kind of stinks when HOTS uses you as a counterweight to balance out the average rating between two teams.
For the lower ranks, it’s bad being matched up against better players who will bully them out of lanes in the early game.
Heroes of the Storm Development Updates – April 12, 2018
Heroes of the Storm Posted on Feb 19, One of the most problematic aspects of the game is matchmaking. Being matched with players of high ranks, where the fate of a game is decided on the loading screen is no fun.
A source of frustration for Heroes of the Storm players since the first good players started pulling away from the Yannicks, the game’s matchmaking system is getting a major overhaul in the coming.
We just got back from the Heroes, What’s Next Panel. We saw a new role system that’s coming in: Have you ever thought about rating the heroes based on other factors such as their wave clear, self-sustain or their ability to dive? So it’s definitely a work in progress. We’re still actively working on this and seeing what’s best for the game. As far as rating heroes on where they are, we try and give small descriptions on what they will be good at. I think it’s a really good idea to do something like that because certain heroes, even though they might be a tank, they might excel at a specific time.
Maybe you’re really good CC tank. Maybe you’re a really good tank at peeling, you know, which are kind of the same thing. Or maybe you have good self-sustain as a tank. So there are always different ways to do this. It’s definitely a factor that we can take into account when we do split up these roles. Any progress on clans or guilds? So, I mean, me personally, I really am excited for a feature like that.

Speaking on stage during a Heroes of the Storm development panel at BlizzCon , game director Dustin Browder spoke on the failings of the current system. It’s not really working for Heroes of the Storm. Browder called the ranked matchmaking process in particular “too stressful” and “not very fun to play in”, a fact evidenced by our own Yannick LeJacq’s attempts at breaking in.
The way the current matchmaker works is it takes whoever is in the queue — say there are people — and puts them all into a set of matches. Then the program begins swapping those people together, attempting to make a good match. Initially it had six minutes to do this. Later it was increased to ten. But the four extra minutes didn’t make much a difference, because the program would swap these folks around , times in seconds and then pretty much give up.
It tried everything it could. Adding more time wouldn’t change that outcome.
Calculating the MMR[ edit edit source ] An individual player’s Matchmaking Rating MMR is primarily determined by the amount of games that player wins versus how many the player loses. When you win a game, your MMR goes up, while the opposite is true for when you lose. If on the other hand your team lost the game, but you performed very well you would receive a positive PA, but you would still lose MMR overal. Therefore winning or losing a game is the most important factor of the system. The algorithm that determines your performance uses 20 different factors, among them siege damage, hero damage, KDA, EXP soakes, CC time but also many others that are not publicly known.
Those factors are used to tell how a particular player in a particular situation is doing.

In a nutshell, the change involves lessening the possibility that you will be matched against a party that has three more members than what you or your party have. Not sure what this means? There has already been some confusion regarding this change, so here are a few important points to keep in mind: This change only applies to Quick Match. There are currently no guidelines of this type for Hero League.
The matchmaking system still focuses on match quality over party size as it should , so there will be situations where players get matched against larger parties if that is what it takes to provide the most suitable match possible. The matchmaking improvements are ongoing. This is a work in progress, and based on numerous comments from Blizzard, this is their highest priority at the moment. Be patient, and appreciate how much the system has improved over the last month or two.

Jul 14 Views: Heroes of the Storm is a really fun game. In a previous article, I even wrote about why I think it is better than League of Legends. The game was only released about a month ago so it is still very new and not without its fair share of problems. That is to be expected of any newly released online game, especially MOBAs.
But there is one particularly egregious issue with Heroes of the Storm that is literally threatening to kill the game off and that is its shoddy matchmaking.
