How to Install a Water Line for a Refrigerator Ice Maker
As a result, he drinks an awful lot of water. Refilling his bowl manually is a time-consuming task and sometimes I forget. I’ve tried various “fountain”-type dog dishes with internal reservoirs, but I found that they get really nasty really quickly, even the ones with filters. I guess circulating the same water again and again with the dog spit and drool makes for a healthy breeding ground for bacteria. Anyway, I decided it was time to build an automatic water dish that refills itself. I bought an icemaker water hookup designed to attach the icemaker in a fridge to the water supply and my friend Frysteev helped me plumb it in. This valve then runs to some clear tubing, down from the cabinets and into the water dish. Also in the water dish are two sensor wires, one at the bottom and one at the top of the dish.

Just moved into a house with a refrigerator that has an automatic ice and water dispenser. I’d like to move it out a few feet to clean below. If I move the refrigerator, will it break the water line? Or do these things have several feet of extra length for moving purposes? Or do people disconnect the water line internally somehow before moving?

Push Connect Fittings Type of Plumbing Connections Next, decide what type of tools you will need to get the job done, and it should depend on the type of connections that you will be using. If you will be soldering your joints to copper pipe, you’ll need a lot more material. If soldering, you will be soldering copper pipe straight up to the fridge eliminating a large chance of leakage that most other types of connections bow to eventually.
If you are not soldering your joints, you will be using compression fittings, or the push-on fittings that connect directly to the copper supply piping. With push-on fitting you will copy the route of soldering, and bring your copper pipe right up to the fridge. Compression fittings will utilize a saddle valve off of a copper pipe source make sure it is a the cold water source and bring water to the fridge with a flex line. This flex line can be copper, or plastic like the ones that come in a refrigerator water installation kit – these can be picked up at the hardware store, and they should have everything you need including the saddle valve.
Water Line Installation Video Water that tastes good Many feel that plastic supply lines to refridgerator dispensors adds a bad taste to the water. Most prefer copper supply lines because of this. I agree, water tastes better at the kitchen sink. I disagree – I have plastic supply lines. See results Locate Where Your Nearest Water Line is In most cases, your nearest line will be under your kitchen sink, or another pipe source near-by – usually under the floor in a basement.
Whether you will be using a saddle valve for flex line or soldering, this would be a great time to make sure that the water supply is turned off. You can also drain any excess water in the line by turning on any faucet below this point in the water line to ensure that all the water is out of the pipe before you cut or pierce the water line – use the bucket to catch any water.

On the sides of the box there are flanges for hanging. There is a nice finish trim that snaps on the the box that gives it a clean look. I installed this in “new” construction complete kitchen gut job so I can’t speak to retrofitting into old construction, but I imagine it would be nearly as easy. I connected a braided stainless steel ice maker hose directly to the valve – quick and easy. Ice maker and water dispenser work great! My kitchen is undergoing a remodel, so when I saw this product, I couldn’t resist.
Our prior water connection to my refrigerator came from a hole in my kitchen floor. This is so very much nicer. The well-constructed recessed box makes for a much neater installation and looks great hidden behind my fridge.

Aug 20, 0 comments I bought a new refrigerator from Lowes and Expo came out the next day to deliver it. Lowes – Review in Installers category from Whittier, North Carolina Once disconnected water starting spraying all over my kitchen walls and flooding the floor. All the guy did was put his thumb on the connection, my wife had turn the water off for them. So while my wife is on her knees cleaning up water that they refused to clean, one of the men got under the sink where the connection was and somehow, God only know how, disconnected the hose from the connection.
Well again water started pouring into the cabinet. Expo closed the cabinet doors and left it that way and didn’t say anything to my wife about it, had her sign a form stating no leaks were found and then quickly left.

However, there is nothing automatic about getting a water line hooked up to the ice maker. If you are lucky, there will be a hookup in your kitchen wall near the refrigerator. If not, you will need to run a line to the nearest cold water pipe, which is probably in the floor below your kitchen. An hour project of drilling and running flexible hose is well worth the pleasure of ice on demand.

Do i need to hook up my water line on my refridgerator in order for it to work?
The sink and refrigerator would have to be on the same side of the room, and ours are not. But that still left me with the problem of our non-working ice and water dispenser. I wanted a solution that would preferably not involve tearing up our kitchen floor to run a pipe underneath, or any other similarly-major DIY construction effort.
I have a new LG fridge and need to hook up the water/ice line. I have all the parts to do the job, however, the – Answered by a verified Appliance Technician.
A compressed liquid is normally a liquid with a solid or gas pushing down on it, and in the case of this setup, the air would just be pressurized at the top of the keg pushing down on the water. On a keg, the pickup for the liquid is at the bottom, so what happens is the pressurized air pushes the water through the spout at the bottom, then out to the fridge. Air “floats,” being of a lower density than water. It’s as if you attached a hose to the bottom of a water bottle, then blew air into the top of the water bottle – it would force water out of the hose.
The most important hardware would be a keg coupler, which would have two ports – air in and water out. You can buy a compressor and hook it up to the keg full time, or you can buy a small tire compressor and wire up a pressure switch for a bit cheaper. I’m not saying it’s a non-risk, it’s just not too likely in my opinion. Just keep the container clean.
Perhaps the compressed air should be filtered, though. A standard keg has a pressure relief valve set a little above that; if that valve were to fail, the tank might explode at pressures over about psi 11 bar.

Edit Answer for another minute You have to put your self in the shoes of a business that is in business to turn a profit of some sort. All businesses have different overhead which in turn decides what their bottom line would be on their services. I personally would not go with an unlicensed professional for this type of install. I do agree that there are some companies that are way out of line for their installs but most of these companies are the really big companies that have very high overheads I would assume.

We are at the tail end of the remodel, finally, and needed to install a water line from the sink plumbing to the refrigerator for the ice maker. This is such an easy process and so I created a tutorial on how to install a refrigerator water line. The instructions apply to replacing an existing water line, as well. An Adjustable Wrench or Pliers Utility Knife First and foremost, if an existing water line is being replaced, turn off the water to the line.
It will be located under the sink! More information may be included on the instructions that are included in the icemaker kit, so make sure to thoroughly read those first! Carefully move the refrigerator out from the wall, and remove any kickplates installed on the lower part of the cabinet on the floor. We built the cabinets in the Rebel house using furniture legs to elevate them off of the floor, and the kickplates had not been installed yet.
If the line is just being replaced, unscrew the brass nut on the valve for the old icemaker line under the sink, and remove the line. I removed the existing line from the refrigerator by unscrewing the brass nut holding the water line in the valve. The line is generally located at the lower right edge of the back of the refrigerator. It would be easy to add a coupler to tap into the existing line but doing so adds an extra place for a leak to occur.
Plus, that part of the line would be located under a cabinet and it may leak for awhile before being detected thus ruining the floor or cabinets. The icemaker kit will come with a water line, a coupler, a new valve, and a few brass parts such as nuts and ferrules.
